Causes Of Acne …I Have A Few Surprises

The exact causes of acne are still not clear to doctors, but they do know acne takes place when we develope blockages in the follicles within our skin.

Follicles are glands in the skin that secrete sebum (oil). Sebum (oil) is a substance that lubricates our skin and hair.

Below are the actions that take place in the progression of acne:

chocolate causes of acne pic2.jpg Hair follicles become totally or partially blocked with and overgrowth of skin cells. Our skin cells, along with sebum (oil) create a blockage in the follicle.

During puberty our sebaceous glands, which produce sebum (oil), grow larger and we have an increase in sebum (oil.) this provides a breeding ground for bacteria. By the way, these sebaceous glands are found in high concentration on our neck, chest, upper back and arms and yes...our face.

This overgrowth of bacteria causes inflammation, that results in the rupture of follicles which causes us “acne”.

So, you ask why does all of this happen, what are the causes of acne? Well, doctors believe:

Hormones

Yes, hormones can play an important role. It’s important to know that our sebaceous glands are extremely sensitive to hormones. During puberty, our hormones change, sebaceous glands become enlarged and sebum (oil) production increases.

Surprisingly, most people with acne have normal hormone levels, but it’s our sebaceous glands that are so darn sensitive to hormones.

If you believe you have a hormonal imbalance, it's important to see your doctor. She will be able to determine if you would benefit from hormonal therapy or other options.

Stress

Perhaps being stressed out is causing you to break out? From my own personal experience, when my stress level is on the rise, so is the increase of sebum (oil) on my face. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

Getting control on your stress can be a step toward getting control of your acne!

Cosmetics

Take a look in your make-up bag, believe it or not, cosmetics can be one of your causes of acne .

If you wear make-up that clogs pores, this may contribute to your breakouts.

It’s important to look for noncomedogenic, (make-up that does not clog your pores). Although I personally do not come across too many make-up brands that are not noncomedogenic, it’s important to make sure you are purchasing a noncomedogenic brand of make-up.

It would also be a good idea to switch to a water-base make-up instead of an oil-base make-up.
