For Some...Peanuts Cause AcneDo Peanuts Cause Acne? For me, I can overindulge in chocolate, but Lord forbid, I eat a tiny package of cocktail peanuts. By the way...yum!!! In no time I am racing to the kitchen to brew a fresh pot of Rooibos Tea.
I know I'm stirring up some controversy here, but hey...I'm thirty something and speaking from over twenty-five years of experience, which includes lots of peanut causing breakouts!
But... • By day 2 or 3…yep you guessed it... ACNE!!! We’re not talking mild acne
whiteheads
or
blackheads,
nope, we're talking deep, painful severe acne,
nodules
and
cysts,
accompanied by I can literally feel the oil on my skin...YUCK!!!
So, what is it about peanuts that "trigger" acne ?
I strongly believe the connection is due to androgen hormones. As you can see, it all comes down to hormones, again. Androgens are hormones released from our adrenal glands. When androgens are released into our system, they stimulate our sebaceous glands. Our sebaceous glands are responsible for the production of sebum (oil), on the surface or our skin. In this case we are talking an over production of sebum (oil). Even though I know how to control oily skin, I still can NOT eat peanuts! Do you remember earlier I mentioned I always experience an over abundance of sebum (oil) on my skin, after eating peanuts? Yeah...now you see the obvious connection. Don't get me wrong... I still love peanuts, but the fact still remains, I will breakout after eating them "always". For some acne suffers, peanuts cause acne and that is why they are on my list of foods that cause acne. My suggestion to you, if you find you have a peanut/acne connection...try to limit your intake. Peanuts do offer a good source of nutritional value, but for those of us with acne, it would be best to pass on this salty favorite treat.
