First of all…acne is not your fault! It is important that you know and understand this. Unfortunately, for me I did not know the truth about the
causes of acne and was told countless times it was my fault. Over and over, like a broke record I heard from people, “you’re eating too much junk food” or “you’re breaking out, because of all the sugar you eat” or “you need to just drink more water”. I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture.
Now, there is a little bit of truth to that last one…"drinking more water”. I found (and still do) that when I drink my 6-8 glasses of water per day…my skin does look clearer, fresher and hydrated.
• How Can Drinking Water Help With Acne
By drinking water
, you are literally flushing toxins out of your body that can contribute to acne.
• What About Junk Food And Sugar
Well, I’m a firm believer that HORMONES play a vital part in almost all cases of acne, especially teen acne.
Have you ever wondered why you crave sugary foods and snacks? Perhaps, your hormones are contributing to this………
Teen Acne is usually the worse/severest type of acne. During puberty your body is going through some serious changes. The change that is responsible for acne is hormonal, more specifically your androgen hormones.
At this stage in your life, your body starts to produce the hormone called “androgen”. Androgen is a “male” hormone, but both boys and girls develop this hormone. Obviously, boys usually develop more of this hormone and for this reason; boys usually develop worse of more severe acne.
• How Can Androgen Hormones Cause Acne…
Well, during puberty the hormone androgen stimulates your adrenal glands, which produce sebum (oil). It would be nice if this stimulation was gentle, but it’s not. Instead, your adrenal glands go berserk, over producing sebum (oil). This sebum (oil) then becomes trapped in your pores with dead skin cells, dirt, make-up, sweat, bacteria, you name it. This then forms a plug (clogging pores). Next, your white blood cells rush in – trying to correct the problem, but then you are left with acne, sometimes red and inflamed.
• So, How Do You Go About Controlling “Teen Acne”
First things first…you must figure out which active acne ingredient to use when
treating your acne.
One active acne fighting ingredient does not fit all, what may work for a friend may not work for you.
Not only is there the popular Benzoyl Peroxide, but you can choose from a few others like
Salicylic Acid,
which works well for sloughing away dead skin cells, before they have a chance to clog your pores.
Tretinoin (also known as Retin-A) is another great acne fighting ingredient known for its awesome sloughing ability. By the way, Tretinion works great for wrinkles too!
There’s also Sulfur for acne, but you will mostly find this ingredient in acne masks and spot treatments.
Then my favorite acne fighting ingredient of all is Glycolic Acid, I love this stuff! It has the incredible ability to seriously control my sebum (oil)...uncontrollable acne doesn't have a chance.
• It’s Very Important To Give Your Chosen Acne Ingredient A Fair Try
If after 4-6 weeks, you do not see improvement, then try another active acne fighting ingredient.
• Cleansing The Right Way Is the Next Vital Step In Controlling Teen Acne
Since teenagers have an over abundance of sebum (oil) - you got to get your sebum (oil) under control on the surface of your skin. You do this by carefully cleansing your skin 2 times per day with an acne cleanser that works for you. Be careful to gently cleanse, barely touching your skin, in circular motions. Use lukewarm water, followed by a cool rinse of water, to tighten your pores. Gently pat dry or better yet, allow your skin to air dry. Allow your skin to dry for at least 10 minutes before applying your acne toner and/or acne treatment. Your acne cleanser is going to wash away that excess sebum (oil), gently exfoliate dead skin cells and prepare your skin for the next step.
• Moving On To Acne Toners, Keep It Toned with Some Extra Help
Check out my acne toner page
to see if you would benefit from using an acne toner. Since teen acne usually consists of oily or super oily skin…my guess is anyone with teen acne would benefit from a good alcohol free toner. Why alcohol free? Because, alcohol usually over-dries your skin and that results in an over-production of…yes you guessed it…sebum (oil). Your skin tries to make up for the over drying and then really kicks in the excess sebum (oil) production!
Next, wait at least 10 minutes after cleansing your skin, and then apply your acne toner.
This extra step in your acne treatment will give you that extra help in fighting and controlling your acne.
• Over The Counter (OTC) Acne Treatment Or Prescription Acne TreatmentIs Another Vital Step In Controlling Teen Acne, So Choose Wisely
Once you find the active acne fighting ingredient to combat your type of acne, then you are ready to purchase an OTC acne treatment
or prescription acne treatment. Be sure to apply it to your skin at least 10 minutes after applying your acne toner.
Your acne treatment is going to help kill acne causing bacteria (p.acnes) and slough away dead skin cells, thus keeping your pores clean and clear.
Why…? Because during your treatment, your skin is experiencing rapid cell turn-over and is most likely experiencing some degree of dehydration which is stripping away vital nutrients for you skin.
Don't forget about
vitamins for acne.
These are vitamins for clear skin and can help you in your fight against acne!
• Refrain From Picking Or Squeezing
Believe me, I know it’s tempting, but when you do pick or squeeze your acne, you Are further irritating your skin. Picking or squeezing does not speed your recovery, it actually does just the opposite, and you also increase your chances of scarring.
• Last, But Not Least…You may Need To Pull OutThe Big Guns-Oral Acne Medication:

papulesor pustules,
