When it comes to
treating acne,
this oral antibiotic is primarily used for the treatment of inflammatory
types of acne
such as
papules
and
pustules.
By attacking and reducing the acne bacteria (p.acnes), Tetracycline for acne reduces the amount of inflammation, thus controlling papule and pustule acne. As mentioned earlier, you will need to visit your Dermatologist for a prescription in order to obtain this oral acne medication. Most likely your Dermatologist will prescribe Tetracycline for acne for a length of 6 months or less. It's also very common to have your Dermatologist place you on continuing therapy at a lower than normal dosage. As with all antibiotics, there is a chance your body will eventually become resistant to its effectiveness. That's not such a bad thing, because your Dermatologist will simply prescribe another form of oral acne medication.
How is this medication prescribed for acne:
Tetracycline is prescribed in capsules and liquid form. In the treatment of moderate and severe acne, the typical dosage is 500-1000 milligrams per day and taken 2-4x per day. If your Doctor feels your acne is the severest of severe, your dosage may be higher. Once your acne begins to improve, your Dermatologist will lower your treatment dosage.
How to take Tetracycline for acne:
It is important to take this medication exactly as prescribed by your Doctor. This oral antibiotic is not to be taken with food. Take this medication at least 1 hour before any food or at least 2 hours after any food. Be sure to take Tetracycline each time with at least 8 ounces of water. It is especially important to not eat or drink dairy products with Tetracycline, doing so may interfere with the absorption of this medication.
Be sure to share with your Doctor if:
you are allergic to Tetracycline or any antibiotic related to it such as Doxcycline or Minocycline. Better yet
tell you doctor of all medication you are allergic to. you take anything containing Magnesium such as laxatives, calcium supplements, antacids or iron products. you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or if you are breastfeeding.

While taking Tetracycline, your skin may become sensitive to the suns rays. During your treatment, try to limit your exposure to the sun. When going outside, be sure to use a good moisturizer with a SPF of 15 or higher.
